Zeng Zengan Strawberry - a hybrid of German quality
Not every garden strawberry tolerates the harsh Russian climate as well as the Zenga Zengana berry. The culture was bred under the leadership of the German breeder R. von Zengbush from the parent pair Markee and Sieger in the middle of the twentieth century and until recently served as a benchmark for productivity for European producers.

Among amateur gardeners, Zengan is quite popular now. This strawberry is unpretentious, resistant to low temperatures, has excellent taste.
The work of specialists who cultivated the Zeng Zengan variety was aimed at creating garden strawberries that would be suitable for industrial cultivation in the northern countries. Therefore, short daylight hours (12-14 hours) do not interfere with intensive flowering and ripening of the berry. In addition, this Strawberry tolerates cold and high humidity well.
Bushes of wild strawberries
The aerial part is high, densely leafy, compact. The leaves are small, shiny, slightly concave, saturated green. Fractions of leaves are rounded rhombic, slightly ribbed.
Peduncles are formed in large numbers. They are quite thin, in height they reach the level of leaves or are located a little lower. Inflorescences are small, multi-flowered.
The bushes take root well and can grow so densely that weeds practically do not appear on the beds. Mustaches and sockets are few.
Flowers and berries
Variety Zenga Zengana is classified as non-permanent, medium-late ripening.
The plant is characterized by early flowering, begins to give the first berries in a month, and the main crop is received in the second decade of June.
However, this strawberry is able to bear fruit for a long time (until the beginning of September). By the end of the season, the berry is noticeably smaller.
Attention! The plant is self-pollinated, forms bisexual flowers.
The fruits of Zengana are fragrant, glossy, dark red, with dense skin and juicy uniform flesh. The shape of the berries is wedge-shaped, sometimes heart-shaped, the size is from medium (20-30 g) to large (80 g). The taste is sweet, with acidity and an unusual musky tint.
Tests have shown that the average yield of Zeng Zengans is 50-70 kg / ha.
But with careful care and good watering, a separate strawberry bush gives 1.5-2 kg of fruit. That is, you can get up to 130 kg / ha.
Now there are more productive hybrids, but this figure is still very high. For areas with a cool climate and high humidity, this is an excellent result.
Transportation and processing
Initially, the Zenga variety was supposed to be used for freezing and preservation, therefore strawberries have hard flesh.
Fruits are easily separated from petioles, suitable for all types of processing.
Strawberry perfectly tolerates transportation It does not soak and does not choke. Keeps its shape during cooking, and even after thawing.
- Beautiful, tasty, fragrant berry.
- Easy to grow and process.
- Possibility of a compact fit.
- Getting a significant, and sometimes double crop.
- Winter hardiness, ability to adapt to difficult conditions
- It requires frequent watering, does not tolerate heat.
- By the end of the fruiting season, the berry is noticeably smaller.
- Instability to gray rot, strawberry tick.

Planting and propagation methods
For such varieties as Zenga Zengana, far from all methods of reproduction are suitable. It is most rational to use vegetative methods.
Mustache and Sockets
In June-July, after fruiting, tendril shoots appear on the bushes of garden strawberries. Touching the ground, they take root, and in this place a new young bush-rosette appears.
To obtain planting material, processes of the most healthy and productive plants are used.
The earth is loosened and watered, helping to develop one or two of the first outlets. Then the mustache is cut off so that it does not pull on nutrients. Young shoots are not separated from the mother plant until it is sufficiently developed.
However, if you need to get a lot of seedlings, this method is not suitable. Zenga Zengana gives too few mustaches.
Partitioning is the optimal breeding method for a crop. This operation is usually carried out in spring or autumn, after fruiting.
You need to choose a healthy plant, on which "horns" appeared - fresh shoots with three young leaves. You won’t have to wait long, since Zengana immediately lays down several of these “horns”. Sprouts with white young roots are separated with a knife. Old dark roots prune.
To obtain planting material, large and fully ripened berries are cut, dried and ground in hands. Separated seeds are subjected to stratification, keeping for 14 days in the refrigerator in the wet state at a temperature of about 5 ° C.
The seeds prepared for planting are sown on the soil surface in pots or boxes, moistened with a spray bottle and covered with plastic wrap. When the first seedlings germinate, the shelter is removed. Bushes with 3-5 real leaves can be planted in the ground.
Attention! Propagation by seeds is one of the most labor-intensive propagation options for this variety.
Zenga Zengana is unpretentious in many ways. For example, it is able to take root on depleted clay or rocky soil. Frequent weeding, special preparations for wintering will not be required. But this culture has its own vagaries.
For normal development, the plant requires a lot of water.
The soil is loosened and mulched so that the moisture is kept constant.
In dry weather, the bushes need to be watered often.
Regular watering is also necessary in the process of ripening berries, otherwise they will be small and dry.
On the one hand, seedlings require good lighting; on the other, it should be protected from wind and weather.
It is recommended to land Zengana near the buildings, but from the sunny side.
The earth is previously loosened. The distance between the holes in the row is 20-30 cm; the depth of the hole is 12 cm. One seedling per hole is enough.
Fertilizer and fertilizing
For a good yield of strawberries of the Zenga Zengana variety throughout the season, regular feeding with organic and mineral fertilizers is required.
Important! Over time, strawberries degenerate and weaken. If the fruits become smaller and, despite good care, there are signs of disease - it's time to update the beds. Once every 4 years it is recommended to move the berry to a new place and completely get rid of old bushes.
Diseases and Pests
Resistant to most diseases and parasites, Zengana often suffers from gray rot and strawberry mites, weevils can also do little harm.
Abundant foliage, tight planting, humidity - these are the prerequisites for the appearance of pests.
- Plant onion and garlic next to the strawberries.
- Provide good air exchange and lighting.
- Mulch the ground with dry needles or straw.
- Regularly remove excess tops and renew plantings.
In addition, you can spray the plants with infusion of onion husks, mustard or garlic.
