Hamedorea elegans: care features and 2 ways of reproduction
Salon palm, or chamedorea elegans, is a popular houseplant, loved by gardeners for a graceful appearance and unpretentious character. The palm is actively used in decorating both home and office interiors.
The natural habitat of palm trees is the tropical forests of Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras. Botanical reference books attribute it to shrubby species due to a creeping trunk on which many shoots appear. Upright and thin shoots of the plant are similar to bamboo shoots (see photo), therefore they call it a bamboo palm.
Not distinguished by high growth (1.5–2 m), chamedorea can not compete with the trees of the rainforest, therefore, it is calm about low light.
Cirrus in shape of the leaves of the plant are painted in dark green. The crown is formed from 7-8 leaves, since the flower has one growth point, there is no branching. In the natural environment in leaf axils, panicle inflorescences are formed, very similar to mimosa flowers.
Palm tree is characterized by slow growth. Each year, only 1-2 new leaves are formed on it. In the indoor version, for the splendor of the bush, several shoots of chamedorea are contained in one pot at once.
Need quarantine after purchase
A flower brought from the store takes time to acclimatize. During the quarantine period, it should be kept separate from other green pets in order to prevent infection (in the store, a palm tree could catch pests or an illness). With overexposure to chamedorrhea, adequate lighting and moderate watering are required. After 2 weeks, a transplant is allowed after purchase.
The subtleties of growing at home
Elegant chamedorea is easy to care for and feels good even in bottle and aquarium gardens. The main thing is to maintain the correct humidity mode. With room content, it is permissible to place the plant in the fresh air (balcony, loggia, veranda). However, you should protect it from direct sunlight. Home care begins with proper placement.
Many are interested in the benefits and harms of home plants. Do not expect harm from elegance, but the benefits are undeniable. Firstly, the palm tree looks great in the interior, gives it originality and comfort. Secondly, it moisturizes and purifies the air of toxins.
It is inappropriate to place the chamedorea elegans on the windowsill, it is more suitable for slightly darkened areas of the apartment: the corner of the room with sufficient lighting, the area to the side of the window or in front of it, a stand-alone floral stand or bedside table. On the cardinal points, the eastern and western are most favorable for the plant.
In the growing season, the palm is actively developing, so the air temperature should be in the range of 16 ... 22 ° C. If these limits are exceeded, the plant should be provided with enhanced irrigation and humidity should be monitored.
Wintering is a dormant period for a plant. At this time, you need to find her a place where you can maintain the temperature in the region of 15 ... 18 ° C. A strong decrease in temperature causes the death of the flower.
Important! Bamboo palm does not tolerate drafts and quickly gets sick with sudden changes in temperature.
Watering and humidity
From spring to rest, the palm tree needs regular and plentiful watering. The need for watering is indicated by a slightly dried topsoil. With deep drying of the soil, the plant dies. It does not tolerate stagnation of water, which leads to the development of root rot. For irrigation take well-settled water.
The optimum humidity is 40-60%. You can maintain it with a regular warm shower and spraying the leaves twice a day. If possible, you can buy a humidifier that will maintain the proper level of humidity.
Attention! Do not place palm trees near radiators. During their functioning, dry air is formed, which is harmful to the plant.
The frequency of transplantation depends on the age of chamedorrhea. A young palm is transferred to another pot once a year. A large adult plant needs a transplant once every 3-4 years. The need for a transplant is indicated by the roots emerging from the drain holes.
Having prepared a new pot, the plant is carefully transferred into it, being careful not to violate the integrity of the root system. Step by step it looks like this:
- Take a pot of larger diameter (2-3 cm, no more).
- Lay pebbles or expanded clay serving as drainage on its bottom.
- To fill up soil. Composition of the mixture: 1 part sand, turf, peat and sheet soil. You can use store soil.
- Gently distribute the roots of the plant at a shallow depth. Add soil. To water.
Tip: for the benefit of the plant, periodically renew the topsoil between transplants.

Top dressing should be carried out from March to October with a frequency of 2 times a month. When November comes, fertilizer input is reduced to 1 time per month and this feeding regimen is maintained until the beginning of March.
As ready-made nutritional mixtures, you can use such brands as "Clean Sheet", Pokon, Bona Forte, "Agricola".
As already mentioned, palm flowers look like mimosa twigs. Its inflorescences have the same spherical small yellow flowers with a light aroma. When they fade, fruits are formed (up to 6 mm in diameter). When ripe, they turn black and contain one seed inside.
Hamedorea is able to bloom all year round. If you like her modest panicle inflorescences, you can leave them. Many gardeners remove the ovaries so that, in their opinion, they do not spoil the appearance of the flower.
In the reproduction of palm trees, two methods are used: dividing the bush and seeds. To get new material for planting, you must have an adult plant that has already given young shoots. The mother flower is taken out of the pot and the offspring are carefully separated from it. Then they are seated in a previously prepared container with soil. Water as needed.
If you are ready to wait six months, then you can try the propagation of Hamedorea seeds. How to grow from seed? The process is lengthy and requires competent care. The seeds prepared for sowing need to be soaked for 5 days. After this, a crucial moment comes: the seed coat must be carefully opened and in this form put it on the ground (1 part sand and 3 parts peat).
Then the container with planted seeds should be put in a warm place (the temperature in it should not fall below 25 ° C) with moderate humidity. Now it remains only not to forget to water the seeds for 6 months and wait until they germinate.
Pests and diseases
Chamedorrhea is quite resistant to diseases, and pests rarely settle on it, but some problems can still occur. What can happen to a plant and why? Diseases:
- Root rot. It arises due to improper, or rather, too abundant watering. In a plant whose roots do not have time to absorb moisture, leaves and stems wilt. To improve the flower, you should pull it out of the pot, carefully examine the root system and remove the rotten parts. Sprinkle places of cuts with coal powder.
- Chlorosis. It is caused by a lack of iron in the soil, manifested by bright spots on the leaves. The solution to the problem is to fertilize the plant with fertilizers with a high iron content.
Of the pests, the spider mite most often attacks the palm. The appearance of the insect is indicated by a whitish coating, affecting the lower part of the leaf plate. To combat it, you need to treat the plant with an insecticide by spraying.
